What you need to know about fruit firmness

When you bite into an apple, you expect a crisp, delicious crunch. Likewise, when you eat a peach — or any other kind of fleshy fruit — you anticipate a distinct texture to help you gauge its maturity and quality. Firmness and texture are easy-to-measure components that help you determine a fruit's quality and marketability.

Measuring these qualities in your fruit helps ensure that it is delicious and delivers the exact ripeness your consumers expect. Knowing your product's shelf life can also help you better manage inventory.

Three easy tips for measuring fruit firmness
You can measure the firmness of fresh produce quickly and accurately with a handheld penetrometer. Follow these tips when using one of our durable, handheld FT Series Penetrometers:
  • Remove a small patch of fruit skin about the size of a nickel.
  • Insert the stainless steel plunger into the fruit until it reaches the line on the plunger tip.
  • Repeat the process on the opposite side of the fruit.

You can determine the firmness of apples, mangos, berries, avocados and more in the field or lab with the handheld FT Series Penetrometers. QA SUPPLIES offers various options, including FT 327, FT 011, FT 444 and FT 02 devices.
