Biodegradable labels with natural compounds to preserve fruit for longer

A technological development based on adhesive labels made from 100% natural ingredients offers an innovative alternative to slow down the ripening process of fresh fruit and mitigate food waste within the supply chain.

The solution, originally devised by entrepreneur Zhafri Zainudin through the company StixFresh (now Ryp Labs), seeks to replicate the same antimicrobial defense mechanisms that plants naturally use to protect themselves against post-harvest pathogens.

Mechanism of action and commercial application

The device leverages the existing labeling infrastructure at fruit handling and packaging facilities. When the adhesive is applied to the fruit or its packaging, natural compounds coating the paper backing are gradually released in the vapor phase. This creates a protective layer on the fruit's skin that inhibits fungal decay and slows down the metabolic processes associated with ripening.

Field trials conducted on climacteric and non-climacteric fruits such as mangoes, avocados, apples, and citrus have demonstrated an extension of commercial shelf life by up to two weeks compared to untreated fruit.

 

Integration into the distribution chain

The primary operational advantage of this technology lies in its ease of integration into existing packing lines, avoiding the need for additional investment in complex machinery or modifications to packaging facilities. As it does not require direct contact between synthetic substances and the fruit pulp, the formulation offers a high level of food safety, positioning itself as a complementary tool for the preservation and transport of perishable fruits to export markets.
