AgriCoat NatureSeal took advantage of its participation in Fruit Attraction to present its new NatureSeal formulation for potatoes, developed to control browning after cutting. The solution stands out for combining a sulphite-free approach with a competitive cost, targeting vegetable processors and, in particular, the fresh-cut produce sector.

During a visit to the company's stand, the Poscosecha.com team learned about this new development and observed the visual comparison presented by Marino Castillo and Simon Matthews between treated and untreated potato samples. The demonstration illustrated the difference in appearance between the samples and highlighted the importance of controlling colour changes after cutting.

Controlling browning without sulphites

Cutting potatoes can trigger colour changes associated with enzymatic browning. This phenomenon can affect the product's commercial appearance and make it more difficult to preserve its quality during processing, storage and distribution.

NatureSeal is designed to help maintain the natural colour and texture of fresh-cut vegetables without altering their taste. According to the technical information published by the company, its formulations are based on specific blends of vitamins and minerals developed to extend the shelf life of fresh-cut fruit and vegetables.

The new potato formulation offers a cost-effective, sulphite-free alternative. This is particularly relevant for processors seeking to maintain the visual quality of peeled potatoes, whether cut into chips, slices, cubes or other formats, without relying on sulphite-based treatments.

The NatureSeal range for root vegetables covers different potato and sweet potato formats, including whole peeled products, French fry cuts, diced products and sliced vegetables. The company also highlights the ease with which its treatments can be integrated into existing processing facilities.

Improving preservation and reducing waste

Maintaining the appearance of cut potatoes is an important consideration for operators supplying the foodservice sector, the food industry and prepared-food distribution channels. Controlling browning can help preserve commercial quality for longer and reduce losses associated with visual deterioration.

In addition to helping preserve colour, NatureSeal is designed to maintain the product's natural texture and avoid undesirable changes in taste. The company indicates that its fresh-cut vegetable solutions can help reduce food waste and the costs associated with product losses and handling.

The actual shelf life achieved depends on the formulation used, the product being treated and the processing, packaging and storage conditions. Results should therefore be assessed according to the requirements and protocols of each processing facility.

AgriCoat NatureSeal: solutions to extend the shelf life of fresh produce

AgriCoat NatureSeal develops postharvest technologies for preserving both whole and fresh-cut fruit and vegetables. Its portfolio includes NatureSeal, which focuses on maintaining the quality of fresh-cut produce, and Semperfresh, a range of edible coatings designed to extend the shelf life of whole fruit and vegetables.

With the launch of its new potato formulation, the company reinforces its commitment to preservation solutions that combine product quality maintenance, waste reduction and adaptation to the needs of the food processing industry.
