Villita Avocados Inc., based in Texas, announced the introduction of the industry's first fully compostable and plastic-free container. In collaboration with Giró, Villita has been working on the bag's development for some time and initially plans to introduce it for their organic avocado customers. The introduction of the new Cellulose Ultrabag is scheduled to begin in early 2024, with plans to extend this packaging to other product lines during the year.

Villita's interest in a plastic-free bag began with an internal sustainability demand from owner Alfredo Rodríguez, who challenged his team to find more ways for the company to contribute to protecting the environment.

Avocado packaging presented a significant opportunity. Essential for driving consumption, these bags represent a large part of Villita's business, and that business continues to grow.

In the words of Rob Ybarra, Executive Vice President at Villita Avocados:

"Providing our customers with the option of a sustainable bag for our fastest-growing category became a reality with Giró as our partner. Everyone wants to contribute something to protecting the environment. That's the beauty of this. When we partner on sustainability initiatives, we're part of something bigger, something that transcends beyond. Can you imagine the huge positive impact? Then, when we tell that story to consumers, the effect is multiplied. This is a turning point for avocados in bags, and we are proud to be part of it."
