Ilerfred has carried out a high-efficiency refrigeration installation in a fresh produce facility located in Mercabarna. The system is designed to meet the storage and operational needs of the fruit and vegetable sector, using the natural refrigerant R-290.

The installation consists of two propane R-290 chiller plants, with a total cooling capacity of 950 kW and an operating range of -8/-4 ºC. The use of this natural refrigerant supports the development of more efficient industrial refrigeration solutions adapted to current sector requirements.

Heat recovery for defrost cycles

One of the key features of the project is the integration of heat recovery in the chiller plants. This recovered heat is used to produce hot glycol water, which is then applied in the defrost cycles of the air coolers.

This approach makes it possible to reuse part of the energy generated by the refrigeration system itself and improve the overall efficiency of the installation, an especially relevant factor in fresh produce facilities with continuous cooling needs.

Air coolers adapted to each area

The installation includes different types of air coolers according to the requirements of each area. Cubic air coolers have been installed in the cold rooms, while centrifugal units with air distribution through fabric ducts have been used in the processing rooms.

In the loading docks, double-flow air coolers have been installed, suitable for areas with product movement and specific temperature requirements.

With this project, Ilerfred strengthens its line of efficient, sustainable refrigeration solutions adapted to the fresh produce sector.
