Repsol Materials presented the ALBA project at MeetingPack 2026, highlighting its developments in polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) technologies for packaging applications.
During his presentation, José Ángel Prieto Esteban, Technical Assistance and Development Engineer at Repsol Materials, explained how these new capabilities will expand the company’s material portfolio, improving key properties such as impact resistance, low-temperature performance, and thermal stability.
According to the speaker, the new technologies will enable the development of higher-performance materials, including heterophasic polypropylene grades with enhanced mechanical resistance and adaptability to demanding applications such as packaging requiring sterilization or cold conditions.
The presentation also addressed the optimization of parameters such as molecular weight distribution and material stiffness, which are key to adapting polymer performance to different packaging applications.
Reference was also made to processing technologies such as SPHERIZONE, aimed at increasing the versatility of polypropylene and its ability to meet different technical requirements.
The presentation also highlighted the importance of moving towards simpler structures from a recycling perspective. In this regard, emphasis was placed on mono-material solutions, which facilitate processing and enable higher-quality recycled materials.
The speaker stressed that packaging functionality remains essential, but must be combined with designs that improve recyclability.
Repsol also referred to its range of circular materials, including solutions derived from chemical recycling and bio-circular materials sourced from waste such as used oils.
These solutions will be certified under schemes such as ISCC Plus, ensuring material traceability, and are intended for food-contact applications.
During the presentation, the company emphasized its commitment to material innovation to adapt to sector changes and new packaging requirements in Europe.
In this context, Repsol highlighted its investment in industrial capabilities and technological development to deliver solutions aligned with market needs.
