With global sweetpotato trade expanding, transportation and storage are critical factors. Storage requirements may vary across sweetpotato cultivars, complicating management. Cultivar-specific conditions significantly reduce postharvest losses.

This review synthesizes research on optimal storage conditions, cultivar-specific tolerance, and related quality changes.

It also summarizes preservation techniques used in sweetpotato storage and evaluates their impacts on quality and food safety, along with their limitations.

Although storage technology is advancing toward green, intelligent, and integrated solutions, challenges such as chemical residues, high facility costs, and variability in storage tolerance among cultivars remain unresolved.

The mechanisms of synergistic effects among preservation techniques remain unclear and need further study.

Future research should focus on promoting green preservation techniques, breeding storage-tolerant cultivars, and integrating full supply-chain technologies.

To achieve efficient storage and sustainable development, the combination of natural preservatives with physical control methods and the development of low-energy storage facilities may become key priorities, supporting the breeding and commercialization of new sweetpotato cultivars.

For large-scale, long-term storage, finding cost-effective solutions for film-coating and biological preservation remains a significant challenge.

However, in the near future, synergistic applications of diverse preservation technologies may enable efficient and affordable sweetpotato storage, ensuring both commercial feasibility and quality control.
