The Citrocide® Fresh-Cut technology, developed by Citrosol to ensure hygienic washing of minimally processed fruit and vegetables, took center stage at EICCA 2025.
The 1st Ibero-American Meeting on Garlic Science and Cultivation, held on October 7–8 in Pulpí (Almería, Spain), brought together academic institutions, sector associations, producers, and the auxiliary industry from Spain and Latin America, all linked to the garlic agroindustry. Over two days, participants attended conferences, round tables, and field visits that addressed topics such as innovation in cultivation systems, sustainability, product quality improvement, and export opportunities in international markets.
The event combined technical presentations with networking spaces, once again highlighting Citrosol’s role as a global reference in postharvest solutions, particularly in the field of processed garlic. The meeting opened on October 7 with an inaugural session and a technical program covering soil management, seed innovation, varietal improvement, plant health, and market differentiation.
The second day focused on crop protection, technology, postharvest processes, and export strategies, featuring the participation of leading companies such as Citrosol, which presented its Citrocide® technology. The Citrocide® Fresh-Cut system, developed by Citrosol, ensures the hygienic washing of peeled garlic cloves, achieving a drastic reduction in microbial load on their surface and extending their commercial life by more than 20 days.
Processors and exporters of garlic cloves from Spain, France, and Peru have been using the Citrocide® system for over five years to hygienically wash peeled garlic, ensuring fresher and safer products for their customers.
During the postharvest-focused session, Citrosol delivered a presentation on food safety in garlic washing processes and strategies to mitigate microbiological risks associated with water use in postharvest operations.
Stand de Citrosol en EICCA 2025
The Ibero-American Meeting on Garlic Science and Cultivation was organized in its first edition by the Spanish National Association of Garlic Producers and Marketers (ANPCA) and the City Council of Pulpí (Almería). The event brought together professionals from Spain and Latin America representing major garlic production and export companies, international experts, and key industry players such as JJ Broch and Citrosol.
Founded in 1964 as Productos Citrosol, S.A., the company’s postharvest technology and treatment activities began in the 1960s within Electroquímica del Serpis, S.A., both based in Potries (Valencia, Spain).
Following significant organic growth over the past 10–15 years, Citrosol now employs 136 people, including staff in its subsidiaries in South Africa, Peru, and Uruguay, as well as dedicated personnel in Egypt. Its facilities in Potries include an R&D laboratory and a 1,200 m² pilot plant. Innovation has been a driving force behind Citrosol’s success, earning the company several awards, including the CEPYME Innovation Award (2015 and 2020) and the Valencia Chamber of Commerce Innovation in Business Award (2020).
Initially a specialist in citrus postharvest treatments, Citrosol has expanded over the last decade to develop solutions that extend the shelf life of avocados, peppers, tomatoes, peeled garlic, and other fruits and vegetables. Currently, the company is introducing to the market its Citrocide® Fresh-Cut System, designed for the fresh-cut (fourth range) industry, which significantly reduces the water and carbon footprint during production. Through all its treatments and technologies, Citrosol contributes substantially to reducing food loss and waste in fresh fruit and vegetable supply chains.
