Citrosol, a company specialized in post-harvest solutions and technology for fresh produce, has renewed for the fourth consecutive year its registration in Spain’s Carbon Footprint, Offsetting and CO₂ Absorption Projects Registry of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, corresponding to the 2024 reporting year.
With this registration, the company has once again obtained the “Calculate and Reduce” seal, awarded to organizations that measure their carbon footprint and demonstrate emission reductions. The certification covers Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, meaning direct emissions and those derived from electricity consumption.
According to the certificate, Citrosol achieved an 11.39% reduction in emissions intensity during the 2022–2024 period compared to the previous three-year period, 2021–2023. This result reflects the company’s progress in managing and controlling its environmental impact. As the company states:
“In Citrosol, our commitment to environmental protection is not just a statement of intent, but a central part of our strategy. We do not limit ourselves to complying with the law; we go one step further by integrating an Environmental Policy that requires us to accurately measure our carbon footprint. Only by understanding our emissions can we reduce them effectively, driving sustainability that is, above all, responsible and effective.”
The carbon footprint calculation includes the company’s main activities, such as the design and production of water-based waxes, the manufacture and commercialization of products for post-harvest application on fruits and vegetables and disinfectants for the food industry, as well as the design and production of post-harvest treatment machinery.
The registration of the carbon footprint in the official Ministry registry highlights Citrosol’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability through the measurement of its carbon footprint and the implementation of measures aimed at reducing it.
Although founded in 1964 as Productos Citrosol, S.A., post-harvest treatments and technology activities began in the 1960s within Electroquímica del Serpis, S.A., both located in Potries, Valencia. Following significant organic growth over the past 10–15 years, Citrosol currently employs 136 people, 12 of whom are based abroad in subsidiaries in South Africa, Peru and Uruguay, as well as its own staff in Egypt. At its facilities in Potries, the company operates an R&D laboratory and a pilot plant of more than 1,200 m². Much of its organic growth has been driven by its strong innovation profile, having received the CEPYME Innovation Award in 2015 and 2020, and the Business Innovation Award 2020 from the Valencia Chamber of Commerce.
Citrosol was originally founded as a specialist in post-harvest treatments and technology for citrus fruit. For more than 10 years, however, through its R&D efforts, the company has developed solutions to extend the commercial life of avocados, peppers, tomatoes, peeled garlic and other fruits and vegetables. Currently, Citrosol is introducing its solution for fresh-cut produce, the Citrocide® Fresh-Cut System, which significantly reduces water and carbon footprint in the production of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables. Through its treatments and technologies, Citrosol contributes to reducing losses and food waste in fresh produce.
