Packaging to Enhance the International Pomegranate Market

The pomegranate, a juicy fruit with countless health benefits, is attracting more attention from European and East Asian consumers than ever before. As the 2023 pomegranate season enters its final phase, significant changes are taking place compared to the previous year, and Paclife plays a crucial role. The Importance of the Pomegranate Market in Peru Peru entered the international pomegranate market in 2008, achieving significant growth in production in 2022, where one ton of pomegranates reached a value of US$2,000, marking a significant milestone in the development of the Peruvian industry. Despite the challenges of 2023, such as a 10% drop in shipment volume, there has been a 7.7% increase in the total value of exports. This is largely due to a more than 20% increase in prices in the international market. Throughout the year, approximately 43,000 tons of pomegranates were exported, with an estimated value of US$87 million. For comparison, in 2022, exports were about 48,000 tons with a value of approximately US$81 million. The limitation in export growth to major East Asian markets such as China, South Korea, and Japan is believed to be due to the presence of global producers in the region, such as India, Iran, and China, which have significant logistical advantages over Peru. However, the Latin American country has demonstrated a strong presence in other markets and is working to expand into East Asia. Currently, Peru has 2,350 planted hectares, concentrated in the regions of La Libertad, Áncash, Lima, and Ica. The most exported varieties are Wonderfull, 116, and Kamel, with the export season running from January to May. According to PromPerú, pomegranates rank tenth among the most exported products in the country. Paclife's Ideal Solutions One of the key factors behind the conquest of international markets by Peruvian pomegranates has been Paclife's technology and its implementation of packaging solutions for the preservation of export fruits. Paclife is renowned for its use of modified atmosphere technology in the Pallet Cover, which enables the efficient and safe shipment of fresh pomegranates from Peru to any destination. The modified atmosphere Pallet Cover has become a reliable ally for exported fruit. Specifically designed to preserve and protect fresh pomegranates from origin to destination, it keeps the fruit's freshness and sensory properties in optimal condition for extended periods. Furthermore, it reduces cooling times in the packaging process, which reduces the use of packaging materials and associated costs. The Paclife film used in the automation process has also become an excellent option for transporting pomegranates to distant destinations. By keeping the fruit in its best condition, this film allows for better prices due to its excellent optics and technological characteristics. It offers high resistance to breakage and basal sealing, improving the product's aesthetics and branding, as well as increasing process efficiency. Paclife has successfully provided secure and sustainable packaging solutions for transportation, with a constant and safe stock, resulting in added value and better prices for pomegranates and other products in the region. Their commitment to sustainable raw materials and safe technologies has been instrumental in the success of Peruvian fruit."
