The most cost effective way of packing Iceberg Lettuce is to do it directly in the field. For this BrimaPack has developed the modular VePack 200-PRV machine with a vertical in feed system. At field level the workers, which are sitting on their knees, cut & clean the lettuce and place it in the in feed system. The produce is then transported to the packing units. The packaging machines are mounted in so called harvesting headers which can handle up to 16 meters of crop. The headers are mounted in front of tracked or wheel driven self propelled harvesters. Packing efficiency of the workers can be more than doubled, up to 400 heads/worker per hour! Total harvesting rig capacity can exceed more than 7.000 heads/hour.
