The recent creation of Zymotopia, a spin-off of IATA-CSIC and the University of Valencia, represents a new advance in the development of enzymatic disinfection technologies for the agri-food industry.
The company was born out of scientific developments in the field of molecular enzyme engineering, with the aim of bringing innovative solutions to the market for tackling microbiological contamination in industrial environments. These technologies are based on the use of enzyme combinations designed to act as active disinfecting agents, offering an effective and adaptable alternative to conventional methods.
In this first stage, Zymotopia's developments are focused on the disinfection of surfaces in the food industry, including processing lines, equipment, packaging, and other elements in contact with fresh and processed foods, with a special focus on fourth and fifth range products. During the interview, those responsible for the project clearly emphasized this initial focus:
Dr. Antonio Alberola, manager of Zymotopia, points out:
“Initially, in the food industry, surfaces can range from conveyor belts to the boxes where fruit and vegetables are stored.”
The tests carried out so far show levels of effectiveness compatible with the usual microbiological validation criteria, achieving reductions of more than 99.9% of viable bacteria, which reinforces the potential of these solutions for application in demanding industrial environments.
Zymotopia is currently in an early phase following the incorporation of the company, although it already has a technological base that has been validated through previous trials. At the same time, the company has begun testing with potential industrial clients and is working on defining the registration and approval strategy for its developments.
In the medium term, the company plans to expand the scope of its technologies to new applications, including their possible direct use on food, subject to the relevant regulatory processes.
With this strategy, Zymotopia aims to position itself as a major player in the field of sustainable disinfection technologies, offering innovative solutions aligned with the current needs of the agri-food industry in terms of safety and microbiological control.
