Futamura and Bio4Life propose compostable labels for fruit and vegetables

Stickers attached to fruit and vegetables are also part of the challenge of reducing plastic waste. Futamura and Bio4Life have developed a self-adhesive label that combines NatureFlex™ cellulose film with BioTAK® compostable adhesive, designed for fruits such as apples, citrus, avocados, and kiwis.

This solution aims to replace conventional labels, which typically combine plastic materials with non compostable adhesives. Since consumers often discard them along with the skin or fruit scraps, these small stickers can end up in organic waste streams and complicate processing.

According to the companies, the label is certified for industrial and home composting, is suitable for food contact, and is designed to maintain its printing and in-line application performance. NatureFlex™ film, made from cellulose, is available in various versions transparent, white, or metallized to meet identification and commercial presentation needs.

The solution also complies with the requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The regulation stipulates that, by February 12, 2028, at the latest, adhesive labels applied to fruit and vegetables must be compatible with industrial composting standards; compatibility with home composting may be required as determined by individual Member States. Regulation (EU) 2025/40.

For fresh produce operators, innovation is focusing on a small component found in many fresh products. Adoption will depend on companies validating its performance under real-world conditions including labeling, handling, and retail and verifying the requirements applicable to each market. Futamura and Bio4Life present this collaboration as a way for packers and distributors to move toward labels compatible with organic waste management.
