ULMA will demonstrate how to choose the right packaging and machinery for fruit and vegetables during its Open Week

ULMA Packaging will host another edition of its Open Week in Memmingen, Germany, from September 28 to October 2, 2026. The event will allow customers and partners to compare packaging alternatives and analyze their product requirements with specialists before committing to an investment.

According to Thomas Blümel, Managing Director of ULMA Packaging GmbH, the event will offer the opportunity to view each customer's product in various packaging formats and evaluate their practical application. The goal is to facilitate decisions that take into account both current needs and the adaptability of the equipment.

Comparing formats before investing

The choice of packaging affects fruit protection, commercial presentation, and material consumption. Blümel points out that switching from a tray to a bag can significantly alter the amount of material used—a factor that must be evaluated alongside the product's specific needs.

Consulting with specialists makes it possible to address these differences and determine the right combination of format, material, and machinery for each application.

Five technologies for diverse needs

ULMA’s offering for the fruit and vegetable sector comprises five systems: horizontal flow pack, vertical packaging, thermoforming, tray sealing, and stretch film wrapping. This variety allows for the evaluation of alternatives for fruits and vegetables with differing handling and presentation requirements.

Its portfolio includes, for example, solutions for trayless vegetables such as tomatoes, asparagus, peppers, and lettuce. It also covers tray-based formats, including tray sealing and horizontal wrapping applications.

These options provide a basis for comparing configurations, although the final selection requires verifying product behavior and the specific operating conditions of each facility.

Materials and machinery must advance in tandem

The company is also developing material alternatives focused on eco-design and ease of recycling. These include the option to configure flow-pack machines to run on paper, depending on the specific application requirements.

During Open Week, a collaboration with packaging material supplier Polytrade will bring expertise to the testing and development of new solutions. This partnership aims to deliver options that meet both current demands and future customer needs.

The event will thus focus on a practical decision for fruit and vegetable packing facilities: selecting a system that properly protects and presents the product, using compatible materials and offering the adaptability to keep pace with market trends.
