Measurements

What are harvest maturity indices? Why are they important?

Determining the optimal harvest time using precise indices is vital for ensuring shelf life and reducing waste.

In the fruit and vegetable supply chain, food waste is largely driven by the use of unreliable harvest indicators. To address this challenge, companies like Felix Instruments are leading the shift toward precise, non-destructive measurement methods. Accurately distinguishing between physiological and commercial maturity is a crucial first step in ensuring that produce reaches the consumer in optimal condition in terms of flavor, texture, and nutritional value.

Types of indices and key parameters

Maturity indices are categorized based on the nature of the parameter being evaluated:

  • Physical parameters: These include size, weight, skin and flesh color, fruit firmness, and the ease of abscission (detachment). While visual color remains the most widely used non-destructive method, it is often insufficient for climacteric fruits.

  • Chemical changes: These involve measuring the accumulation of bioactive compounds, such as soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), starch content, and notably dry matter, which correlates strongly with final consumer acceptance.

  • Physiological and chronological parameters: These include the assessment of respiration rates, ethylene production, or the cumulative calculation of heat units and days elapsed since flowering.

Towards Non-Destructive and Objective Measurement

A good maturity index should be easy to apply in the field, quantitative, and, ideally, non-destructive. Traditionally, many methods required sacrificing fruit samples. Today, advanced technologies based on near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy allow for the instantaneous measurement of complex chemical parameters such as dry matter and sugar content without altering the fruit. Specialized portable tools, such as the quality meters from Felix Instruments, have become indispensable assets for producers, enabling them to make accurate harvesting decisions.

Strategic Benefits Across the Supply Chain

Implementing a rigorous maturity index strategy offers direct advantages to the entire fruit and vegetable industry:

  1. Maximizing Yield and Shelf Life: It determines the precise harvest time to ensure optimal preservation during transport and storage.
  2. Regulatory and Commercial Compliance: It facilitates meeting strict international import and export standards based on internal quality parameters.

  3. Reduced Losses and Greater Sustainability: It prevents physiological disorders associated with premature or late harvesting, reducing rejections on store shelves and improving the overall profitability of the sector.
