¿Have you ever wondered where kiwifruit quality really begins? Long before the fruit reaches the consumer, important decisions are already being made in the orchard: when to harvest and how to assess whether fruit has reached the right level of maturity.

For those working with kiwifruit, dry matter (DM) is a familiar quality parameter. As kiwifruit grows, it accumulates starch and other dry components, which later contribute to sugar development and eating quality as the fruit ripens. This makes DM a useful indicator when assessing maturity and planning harvest.

The challenge is that conventional dry matter testing is destructive. Fruit must be cut, weighed, dried, and weighed again. While this method can provide reliable results, it is time-consuming and means that only a limited number of fruit can realistically be tested.

Is there an alternative?

NIR spectroscopy offers a faster, non-destructive way to assess kiwifruit quality. The F-751 Kiwifruit Quality Meter from Felix Instruments uses this technology to estimate dry matter and °Brix within seconds, while also assessing internal color in applicable yellow and red kiwifruit varieties. The instrument is available with dedicated models for Hayward, Gold 3, and Red 19 kiwifruit.

For both experienced QC professionals and those new to NIR technology, the F-751 kiwi offers a practical way to:
●    Test more fruit without destroying the samples.
●    Collect objective data on internal fruit quality.
●    Reduce product waste associated with destructive testing.
●    Make better-informed decisions about maturity and harvest timing.

Measurements take only a few seconds, allowing users to monitor variability within an orchard, compare different lots, and support harvest planning.

The portable F-751 can be used in the field, at packing facilities, during storage inspections, or as part of routine quality control.
By making non-destructive testing practical on a larger scale, the F-751 helps quality teams move beyond limited sampling and gain a broader picture of fruit quality throughout the supply chain — from harvest and storage to packing and distribution.

Additional Kiwifruit Quality Control Tools

Alongside the F-751 for kiwi, Fresh Produce Instruments offers additional tools for kiwifruit quality control, including Baxlo analogue and digital fruit firmness testers, the FT-327 Fruit Firmness Tester, refractometers for °Brix measurements.

Planning to visit Fruit Attraction in Madrid this October? Stop by FPI at Stand E04, Hall 6, from October 6–8, 2026, to discover the F-751 Kiwifruit Quality Meter and our professional quality control solutions.
